Guide Review - Review: Selena Gomez and the Scene - "Love You Like a Love Song"
This relentlessly upbeat and gently sexy song of head over heels love from the album When the Sun Goes Down is arguably the best concoction by the songwriting and production team Rock Mafia since their brilliant "Potential Breakup Song" for the duo Aly & AJ. One of those reasons is that Selena Gomez' vocals become richer and deeper with each new record. She opens the song with an engaging warmth edged with just a bit of sultry that draws listeners into the record instantly. What follows is the ultra-catchy "I keep hittin' repeat peat peat" chorus.
Rock Mafia's production on "Love You Like a Love Song" is mostly basic, insistent electro-pop. However, strings are introduced in subtle swirls and flourishes that deepen the mix as Selena Gomez' vocals are layered together. "Love You Like a Love Song" moves well outside of being dismissable teen pop. It is a terrifically engaging mainstream pop record.
Although "Love You Like a Love Song" has already become the fifth top 40 pop hit for Selena Gomez and the Scene, they are still looking for that so far elusive first top 20 success. There seems to be a frustrating roadblock for Selena Gomez and the Scene at pop radio. However, the most recent single "Who Says" climbed to #21 on the overall pop singles chart and was their biggest hit. "Love You Like a Love Song" is worth the attention. Listen and be charmed. If you are in the first flush of love, this just may be your theme. If not, the song will make you wish you were.
