Guide Review - 'Inside Your Heaven' - 'Independence Day' by Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood's first single release after winning season 4 of American Idol is pleasant, but it doesn't reach far beyond that. The song "Inside Your Heaven" is a bit schmaltzy (and we'll be treated to another version from runner-up Bo Bice next week). Underwood's voice and delivery is strong, however, and rescues the song from drowning in syrupiness. Christian radio stations have been eager to play her version of "Inside Your Heaven."
"Independence Day," the second song on this single, is a more inspired choice. It was originally a hit for Country singer Martina McBride. The lyrical content bears some resemblance to Shawn Colvin's powerful "Sunny Came Home," a tale of a woman who resorts to violence in declaring independence from past demons. If I were placing bets, I would expect Underwood to head in the Country direction, emulating stars such as McBride. If she has a good ear for material, her voice can be a strong one on the Country scene.
