The Bottom Line
It's light, sweet, and it's another irresistible smash from Flo Rida. Eiffel 65's "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" has one of those hooks that grabbed everyone instantaneously the first time around. This type of sample-based froth is not the peak of pop artistry, but as pop fans are dreaming in March and April of the pleasures of summer yet to come, it hits the right spot.
Pros
- The sugary sweet sound is irresistible
- Enduring hook from Eiffel 65's "Blue (Da Ba Dee)"
- It sounds like summer on the way
Cons
- The auto tune effects are unnecessary

Guide Review - Flo Rida featuring Wynter - "Sugar"
Flo Rida's #1 smash "Right Round" reminded any who needed a reminder what a powerful pop classic Dead or Alive's 1985 hit "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" is. Now he's doing the same with Eiffel 65's 1999 smash "Blue (Da Ba Dee)." The original is one of the greatest nonsense pop classics of all time. Flo Rida's take is all about the sweetness of a kiss, but it might as well be pure nonsense, too. The musical hook is the thing here.
Not only does Flo Rida reintroduce us to past pop classics, but also he seems to be good at introducing singers on their way up as featured artists. "Right Round" included vocal assists from Ke$ha. Now "Sugar" has vocals from rising R&B singer-songwriter Wynter Gordon as a feature. Gordon has written music for Mary J. Blige and Danity Kane. She has a debut album for Atlantic Records in the works.
"Sugar" has all the elements to give it a fighting chance to be Flo Rida's third huge #1 pop smash. The bright sunny sound on a grey day with that Eiffel 65 hook everyone can sing along with will race to the upper reaches of the charts. Perhaps the dire straits of the economy plays a role here as well. Instead of riding on the cusp of a fear-filled future, "Sugar" revels in the friendly, familiar, nostalgic memories of a bubbly pop day in the past.
