The Bottom Line
It is difficult to simplify a pop song much more than the minimal synth line, repetitive chant, and undisguised sexual innuendo of "Laffy Taffy." Fortunately, the catchiness is real and that synth line sparks memories of the handheld Casios of the 80's.

Guide Review - Laffy Taffy - D4L (Atlantic)
Back in the 80's I could have pounded out the minimalist synth line of "Laffy Taffy," put together an ambiguous lyric line somehow connecting sex and candy, and chanted it over and over. However, I didn't, and millions of others haven't either. A hit like "Laffy Taffy" is not a showcase for musical skill, but it does require a creative spark and musical intelligence.
"Laffy Taffy" is the first national breakout hit of a new hip hop sub-genre out of Atlanta referred to as Snap. It remains to be seen whether a flood of records will follow in its wake similar to the recent Crunk deluge. However, "Laffy Taffy" is headed into the pop top 10 and has a chance at #1. If you haven't heard it yet, you will.
Perhaps instead of deriding the simplistic nature of "Laffy Taffy" or feeling offended by the sexual cliches of the accompanying video, give in and enjoy it. Relax, snap your fingers, and sing along. There are more unpleasant ways to pass 4 minutes of time.
