The Bottom Line

One of the secret weapons in the phenomenal musical success of Disney Channel's Miley Cyrus is that her songs are some of the hookiest bubblegum-tinged pop to hit the mainstream in years. Hot on her heels is the band Metro Station featuring Miley's half-brother Trace, and the success story sounds the same. "Shake It" is instantly catchy and has broken the Hollywood based band into the pop singles charts.

Guide Review - Metro Station - "Shake It"

Sheer exuberance can carry a band a long way on pop radio, and Metro Station are nothing if not exuberant in their sound. The single "Shake It" has a distinctly 80's pop vibe with a bass and keyboard foundation strongly reminiscent of the Cars. The sound of the vocals here drips the possibility of salacious intent, courtesy of Trace Cyrus, but ultimately the lyrics themselves are filled with rather silly schoolboy come-ons.

Despite a certain immaturity in the words, the sound itself is likely to lure you out on to the dancefloor. It won't be long before "you move like this," and she'll "move like that." There are much worse things that could be encouraged by a pop song.

Metro Station are a young band just formed in 2006, but they have hit a fast track undoubtedly enhanced by the family connections of the group's co-leaders. However, with some tightening and maturation, Metro Station present a welcome updating of the sound of many 80's pop classics. They are on the brink of graduating from artist in the wings to artist in the spotlight.
