The Bottom Line

Some credit should be given to Ray J for working to build a name for himself instead of being remembered forever as the male part of Kim Kardashian's notorious sex tape or simply the younger brother of singer Brandy. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to work too hard at it, and he is certainly not pushing any boundaries. This single is primarily for those who have a need for yet another mildly engaging r&b groove littered with familiar sexual innuendo.

Guide Review - Ray J featuring Yung Berg - "Sexy Can I"

Ray J's 2005 album Raydiation, packed with contributions from superstar producers Rodney Jerkins, Timbaland, and R. Kelly, was intended to be the singer/actor's major musical breakthrough. It did produce a top 20 single in "One Wish," but ongoing chart success failed to materialize. Following a stint acting on the TV series One on One and appearances in a number of music videos by fellow artists, Ray J is back making another stab at the musical spotlight.

Unfortunately, Ray J's weaknesses as a recording artist remain glaringly obvious. His voice, not terrible but a bit dull, fails to stand out among his contemporaries. The song, "Sexy Can I," filled with explicit sexual descriptions and come-ons ("While you sliding down the pole, no panties, no shirt..."), makes no effort at musical originality. The chorus is mildly engaging but eminently forgettable.

The overall impression of "Sexy Can I" is laziness. With plenty of friends in the entertainment business, Ray J has managed to gather Snoop Dogg, Lil' Wayne, and even Shaquille O'Neal around him for his album All I Feel, but he seems unable to inspire a work ethic in creating a final product. If you have a niche for a sex-drenched r&b tune you won't remember 6 months from now, by all means pick up "Sexy Can I." Otherwise, you can safely pass it by.
