This song was the result of a concerted effort to bring Diana Ross and the Supremes back to the top of the chart after a period of lackluster success. This gritty social commentary did the trick. As with many Supremes records of the era, Diana Ross is the only group member heard on "Love Child." Studio musicians provide the backup vocals.
