American Idol Season 5 - The Songs

Take Me Home Country Roads

By Bill Lamb, About.com

This is one of the songs performed on American Idol's country night that really was never seriously embraced by country audiences as such. It was John Denver's breakthrough pop hit single, but perhaps the most memorable version is Toots and the Maytals turning the song into a reggae classic.

Performer

Taylor Hicks - April 4, 2006

Songwriters

Bill Danoff, John Denver, and Taffy Nivert

Notable Recorded Versions

  • John Denver - #2 Pop, #50 Country (1971) (Listen)
  • Olivia Newton-John - Track from the Let Me Be There album (1973) (Listen)
  • Toots and the Maytals - Track from the In the Dark album (Listen)

Key Lyric Phrase

I hear her voice
In the mornin hour she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
And drivin down the road I get a feelin
That I should have been home yesterday
