A young R&B singer with an "old soul," Alicia Keys, and a new British rock band, Coldplay, made their first splash on American shores. They would soon rank among the top artists of the coming decade. Pink started the party, and she had plenty of help keeping it going among the top pop songs of 2001.

Male rappers stood toe to toe with female divas among the top songs of 2002. A teenager named Avril Lavigne electrified the pop world singing about a boy who made things "so complicated." Shakira brought her Latin pop-rock to mainstream pop radio for the first time.

Beyonce went solo and the Black Eyed Peas broke into the top of the charts for the first time. However, they were topped by an Atlanta based hip hop duo for the pop song of the year with a truly epic production. Justin Timberlake demonstrated he didn't need the rest of his boy band to make truly compelling pop music.

2004 was truly the year of Usher and he topped the list of the best songs of the year. A new pop-soul band named Maroon 5 caught our attention, and Kanye West walked powerfully into the ranks of the top songs of the year.

Pink topped the charts with a song of marital strife that would ultimately lead to a happy ending.
