The biggest pop songs of the summer of 2007 based on chart performance. Fergie's solo debut leads the way.
This is Fergie's 4th #1 pop single from her debut album The Dutchess. It is also became her biggest hit single to date. The song was certified three times platinum for sales in the US and went to #1 on the pop singles chart around the world. The accompanying music video was directed by frequent Rihanna collaborator Anthony Mandler.
Rihanna had already reached the top 10 four times. However, "Umbrella" took her to a different level of success. The song spent seven consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also topped the dance chart and went to #1 in countries around the world. The coincidence of the chart ascendance of "Umbrella" in various countries with extremely wet weather caused some media to refer to a "Rihanna curse." Totes created a line of umbrellas inspired by the song.
T-Pain's summer smash never made it to the top of the pop chart, but it stuck around as a steamy romantic song all summer long. T-Pain makes reference to a number of other rap songs in the lyrics to "Buy You a Drank." The song did reach #1 on both the R&B chart and the Billboard Hot 100. A unique record set by "Buy You a Drank" is that it spent at least a week in every Hot 100 chart position from #1 to #12. No other song has accomplished that feat.
Pop music fans were captivated by this stripped down ballad. It turned into the Plain White T's first #1 pop single. The group's lead vocalist Tom Higgenson wrote the song after meeting Delilah DiCrescenzo. The pair attended the 2008 Grammy Awards celebration together where "Hey There Delilah" was nominated for the Song of the Year award. The song accomplished the rare feat of being a top 3 hit on both the adult contemporary and alternative songs charts.
Maroon 5 returned with their sophomore album and instantly climbed to the top of the charts with this first single from the album It Won't Be Soon Before Long. The song had the biggest leap into the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 yet recorded when it jumped from #64 to #1 in its second week on the chart. Maroon 5 earned a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By a Duo Or Group With Vocal for "Makes Me Wonder."
Justin Timberlake's effort to have a 4th #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 from the album FutureSex / LoveSounds failed, but "Summer Love" still ranks as one of the top hits of the summer. The song did top the mainstream top 40 radio airplay chart making it the first time an artist hit #1 four times on that chart with songs from the same album.
"Girlfriend" was one of the biggest hits of spring 2007, but it also had enough momentum to land Avril Lavigne in the top 10 for the summer as well. Dr. Luke produced and co-wrote the hit. "Girlfriend" was estimated to be the top selling song worldwide for the year 2007 with more than seven million copies sold.
