American Idol's sixth season winner Jordin Sparks had a highly successful self-titled first album. It landed in the top 10, sold over a million copies and generated three top 10 pop singles. However, thus far, landing a #1 pop song has eluded her. That could all change with her latest single "Battlefield." The song is the first release from her upcoming second album, also titled Battlefield. Jordin Sparks' new song has hit written all over it. This may be the summer Jordin Sparks becomes an enduring pop superstar.
Listen to "Battlefield"
Kristinia DeBarge has a stellar pop-soul pedigree being the daughter of one of the leaders of the family group DeBarge. She looks to a classic hit song to help fuel her debut hit "Goodbye." She is only 19, but need we remind you that a certain 17 year old named Rihanna kicked her career off with the summer smash "Pon De Replay" only four years ago?
Some may have thought that Fergie's ascendance as a solo star would spell the end of the Black Eyed Peas. That seems far from reality as "Boom Boom Pow" has turned into a massive global pop hit. The group's next album, The E.N.D., hits stores in June, and this just may be the summer of the Peas.
The Jonas Brothers' momentum seemed a bit dented by the relatively disappointing box office showing of their 3D film. However, they have jumped right back in the saddle making music. Their new single "Paranoid" shows off a trio growing up musically. Adults should take a second look at the group. The next album, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, will hit stores in June.
6. Ashley Tisdale
Ashley Tisdale is probably the most underrated of the performers to emerge from the Disney pop factory in recent years. The first album Headstrong did manage to be certified gold, but it failed to include a true breakthrough pop hit. "It's Alright, It's OK" is looking to change that in advance of the second album, Guilty Pleasure, due in stores in June. Few female singers right now do cheerful, perky pop better than Ashley Tisdale.
7. Rob Thomas
Rob Thomas' first solo album away from Matchbox Twenty, ...Something To Be, was a huge hit, selling well over a million copies and landing at the top of the album chart. "Her Diamonds" is the first single from his upcoming sophomore album, Cradlesong, and, although it has struggled a bit in the mainstream pop realm, it is already top 10 at adult pop radio. This will be one of the major album releases of the summer when it hits stores in late June.
8. Jessie James
Singer Jessie James is aiming to fill that sweet spot somewhere between pop and country. Her first single "Wanted" is looking adept at reaching that goal. The self-titled debut album is ready for stores in July. Her breezy good looks aren't going to hurt James' reach for success at all.
9. All Time Low
10. Lil Wayne
Rapper Lil Wayne did sell over a million copies in the first week of his last album Tha Carter III. However, the early road has seemed a bit more rough for his upcoming set, Rebirth. It has been promoted as Lil Wayne's first rock album. The performance of preview single "Prom Queen" was a disappointment, and the success of this album when it hits stores in July is anyone's guess right now.
