Top 10 New Pop Songs February 4, 2014


Singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson heads straight to the pop mainstream on her new single to lead the best in new pop songs this week.

1. Ingrid Michaelson - "Girls Chase Boys"

Singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson's audience has grown with the release of each of her five studio albums.  Her most recent album Human Again reached the top 5 on the album chart in early 2012.  "Girls Chase Boys" is her first single from an upcoming sixth studio album.

The accompanying music video is a clever homage to Robert Palmer's 1988 clip for "Simply Irresistible."  It illustrates the concept that ultimately girls chase boys and boys chase girls and we all chase each other.

2. Tegan and Sara - "Everything Is Awesome!!!" featuring Lonely Island

Twin sisters Tegan and Sara earned a mainstream pop radio breakthrough last year with their single "Closer."  "Everything Is Awesome!!!" continues the upbeat tone and is included on the soundtrack album for The Lego Movie.  The movie hits theaters Friday, February 7, 2014.  Comedy trio The Lonely Island contribute raps to the song.


3. The National - "I Need My Girl"

Rock band The National earned a Grammy Award nomination this year for their album Trouble Will Find Me as Best Alternative Album.  It received widespread critical acclaim and was the group's second consecutive album to reach the top 3 on the album chart.  The group appeared on the TV Show CBS This Morning to promote this new single.

4. Prince & 3RDEYEGIRL - "Pretzelbodylogic"

3RDEYEGIRL is the backing band Prince has been recording and performing with over the past year.  This is the follow up single to "Breakfast Can Wait" released early last year.

Prince has sold an estimated 100 million records worldwide.  14 of his albums have reached the top 10 on the album chart.  18 of his singles have reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.


5. Lily Allen - "Air Balloon"

Following a four year hiatus from music, Lily Allen released two hit singles late last year.  Both "Hard Out Here" and "Somewhere Only We Know" reached the top 10 in the UK with the latter going all the way to #1.  "Air Balloon" is another single from her expected upcoming third studio album.  It was co-written and produced by Shellback who works frequently with Max Martin.  It will not be officially released in the UK until March.

6. U2 - "Invisible"

"Invisible" is a sneak preview of U2's upcoming first studio album since 2009 according to lead vocalist Bono.  The single was released initially to help raise money to combat AIDS.  It raised more than $3 million in the first three days of release.  The new album is being created with producer Danger Mouse and is the band's upcoming 13th studio collection.

7. Lana Del Rey - "Once Upon a Dream"

"Once Upon a Dream" was originally created for the 1959 animated film classic Sleeping Beauty.  It was performed by Mary Costa and Bill Shirley who also provided the voices for characters in the film.  Lana Del Rey has revisited the song for inclusion on the soundtrack to the upcoming Disney film Maleficent which is considered a prequel to Sleeping Beauty.  Reportedly, Angelina Jolie, one of the star voices of the new film, handpicked Lana Del Rey to reinterpret the song.

8. Brandi Carlile - "The Chain"

Folk-pop singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile broke into the top 10 of the album chart for the first time in 2012 with her fifth studio album Bear Creek.  Her new interpretation of Fleetwood Mac's classic song "The Chain" is the first single from Hear Music's new Valentine's Day compilation Sweetheart 2014.  The album will be marketed extensively through the Starbucks chain.

9. Big & Rich - "Look At You"

Country music duo Big & Rich have hit the top 5 on the country albums chart with all of their four studio albums.  The first three also reached the top 10 on the overall album chart.  "Look At You" is the first single released from an upcoming fifth studio album titled Gravity.

10. Michael W. Smith - "You Won't Let Go"

Michael W. Smith is one of the most successful contemporary Christian artists of all time.  He has won three Grammy Awards and 40 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards.  "You Won't Let Go" is the first single from the upcoming studio album Sovereign.  It is his first new non-instrumental studio album in four years.
