January 4, 2006
One of the best things about today's online music services is the opportunity to purchase individual songs for unlimited listening regardless of whether or not they have been released as a single. Each week I uncover some of the best pop tracks to download from online music services. The music will range widely across pop genres.
Read lists from previous weeks.
1. Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire
In recognition of the multiple Golden Globe Award nominations for the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, I lead off this week with the June Carter penned classic about her forbidden relationship with Johnny Cash. It was Cash's idea to add the mariachi horns which are a touch of brilliance in the recording.
2. James Blunt - No Bravery
James Blunt was one of the biggest breakout pop stars of 2005 in the U.K., but he is just beginning to gain major notice in the U.S. This track harrowingly depicts his experiences as a NATO soldier in Kosovo.
3. Mary J. Blige - About You
This track from the stellar album The Breakthrough features sampled vocals from the legendary Nina Simone.
4. Anthony Hamilton - Where Did It Go Wrong?
Anthony Hamilton wraps his pain from a relationship gone bad in classic soul. This track is from his powerful Ain't Nobody Worryin' album.
5. Matisyahu - Chop 'Em Down
Jewish reggae master Matisyahu is on many short lists of artists to watch in 2006. This track from the Live at Stubb's album shows his skills.
6. Avenged Sevenfold - The Wicked End
Current MTV TRL favorites Avenged Sevenfold proudly show off their heavy metal roots in this 7 minute epic.
7. From First to Last - Kiss Me, I'm Contagious
Throat-shredding vocals and ringing guitars will clear out your head in this track from the album Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count
8. Keyshia Cole - Love
Delight in Keyshia Cole's vocal gymnastics and smooth soul sensibilities on this song from the album The Way It Is
9. Relient K - The Thief
Christian punk pop band Relient K are in an unusually mellow mood on this standout track from the Apathetic EP.
10. Sugarland - Tennessee
2005 was a breakout year for this group of country music veterans. Enjoy the tale of a girl named "Tennessee."
