Twin Sisters in Entertainment:
The core of the Veronicas pop band is the twin sisters Lisa and Jessica Origliasso. They were born and raised in the Brisbane, Australia area. The pair began performing as children and at the age of 16, in 2001, they received recurring roles on the Australian TV show Cybergirl. At the age of 18 they began recording music as Teal.
Top Pop Songwriters:
In 2004 Lisa and Jessica met music executive Hayden Bell of the Bell Hughes Music Group. He recorded demos with the pair and signed them to a songwriting contract. Their song "All About Us," written with Billy Steinberg and Josh Alexander, became a worldwide smash pop hit for t.A.T.u. Casey Donovan, winner of Australian Idol, recorded the Veronicas' song "What's Goin' On" as part of her first album.
Naming the Veronicas:
The Origliasso sisters have said that the name the Veronicas came about after long consideration. The pair wanted a girl's name but thought naming it after themselves would be "tacky." The pair say the name comes from a line in the movie Heathers. Some also think there is a connection with the character Veronica in the Archie comics. The owners of the rights to the comic sued the group for trademark infringement, but an ultimate settlement included the girls appearing in the comics.
The Secret Life Of...:
Following signing to the Warner Bros. label, the Veronicas first album The Secret Life Of... was released in Australia in October 2005. With the single "4Ever," created with Max Martin, already a hit, the album debuted inside the Australian top 10. Ultimately the album hit #2, spent over a year on the Australian charts, and was certified four times platinum. It also peaked at #3 among US Heatseekers.
The Veronicas Are Australian Pop Stars:
Three more top 20 pop singles were released from The Secret Life Of.... The Veronicas became one of the hottest new pop stars in Australia. The group took home the MTV Australia awards for Best Video and Best New Australian Artist. The Veronicas were even the subject of a fashion line created for Target stores in Australia.
Hook Me Up:
The Veronicas second album Hook Me Up was recorded in Los Angeles in 2007. It was released in Australia in November 2007. The album featured an electro-pop edge and debuted at #2 on the Australian album chart. It included the #1 title single and three more top 10 hits. The album was released digitally in the US in May 2008 followed by a CD release in August. However, commercial success in the US seemed to elude the group.
"Untouched" Makes the Veronicas Stars In the US:
"Untouched" was released as the second single from Hook Me Up in Australia and reached #2 on the pop singles chart there. In July 2008 the song made its first appearance on a US chart at #15 on the "Bubbling Under the Hot 100" chart. Ultimately, strong support from New York's influential radio station Z100 began to budge "Untouched" up the charts. By late 2008 the Origliasso sisters were major celebrities in the US. "Untouched" has peaked inside the top 20 on the US pop singles chart.
